The Lost Prince...

When I rented this I thought that it was something else. Hooray! the BBC has made a film of Frances Hodgson Burnett's (best book in my opinion) The Lost Prince... Nope. You'll have to read it still as far as I know. This Lost Prince is about the family of George V and their sweet son Johnnie who is shut away from the public and largely from the family because he suffers from epileptic fits, which is considered disgraceful. Johnnie is raised by his devoted nurse Lalla, played by the brilliant Gina McKee. The year is 1910 and Europe is broiling in the lead up to WW1. This is a really great program... not to be missed.

Baubles...

Big news... it the middle of August I became a great Aunt... not an Aunt a Great Aunt! That is why the renewed interest in jewelry making... my new little niece needs some sparkly stuff to complete her beautiful pink wardrobe. Anyway, some of these things will be in
today...

Bonza the Horse...

Please don't see any Godfather imagery here... Little c wants to be a cowgirl for Halloween and she is making a painted pony like those in Hidalgo to go with her costume. Bonza the horse looks a little holstein cow at the moment, but she won't once little c gets her mane and her long black yarn tail.. She is looking very cute. Little c has actually stuffed the head already. She is doing such a great job. This is one of those projects that she has done that is amazing to me.

Under the Tuscan Sun...

With the exception of a few secularist rants that detract from the loveliness of the story, I really enjoyed this book.
While it alludes to the story of a life, the book is about beauty and how in Tuscany the sun goes to the soul of everything until it is lit within.
(nothing like the film really..)

Because of Winn-Dixie...

We check out quite a few dog books at our house. Pancake likes them so much you know. This little book is beautifully crafted, tender and hopeful. Kate Di Camillo is an artist whose penned images lead a heart through a difficult path traveling and learning until it breaks open onto a wise and inspired vista. I must be the last to have read this little gem about a dog that smiles, but so glad to have finally discovered it.
I also loved The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.. Pancake didn't like it as much because it's about a rabbit.

The Bookseller of Kabul...

"Khost is a town without women... They lead a life locked in their backyard; they never go out, shop, or even visit. The law of purdah reigns, the total segregation of women." Asne Seierstad from The Bookseller of Kabul.
Think of the implications of this for they are terrible and vast in a way that has destroyed a once flourishing economy and a beautiful culture. Once these areas of the world were centers of learning.. now they are mostly rubble. What is gained by the oppression of women? Nothing is gained and only the devastation of an entire society is accomplished. Sadly it has gone on so long now and people have become so uneducated that they no longer know what they can be because they don't know from what they have come. We must be famililiar with our own history.
By contrast, this wisdom would go a long way to saving the world..
"First, educate your hands and your minds... To you young women may I suggest that you get all the education you can. Train yourselves to make a contribution to the society in which you will live. There is an essence of the divine in the improvement of the mind. “The glory of God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth.” (D&C 93:36.) “Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection.” (D&C 130:18.)" and this..."In the process of educating your minds, stir within yourselves a greater sensitivity to the beautiful, the artistic, and the cultivation of the talent you possess, be it large or small." Gordon B. Hinckley, Rise to the Stature of the Divine within You 1989.
This book as well as others about this area of the world break my heart.

Monogram Love Box...

I like pink & green so much!

Garden Rose...

One of the most tragic things I know about human nature is that all of us tend to put off living. We are all dreaming of some magical rose garden over the horizon-instead of enjoying the roses blooming outside our windows today.
Dale Carnegie
This rose was blooming outside my window and I am trying to take this advice and enjoy it very much. :)

Brownies...

I love chocolate and if I ever suffer a heart attack... these brownies will be mostly to blame...
It's hard not to just schlurp up the batter when they are in this stage because they smell so good.
These are the secrets. The Semi-Sweet Baker's chocolate makes them a milk chocolate brownie... and almost anything worth baking deserves really good Mexican Vanilla... I like this kind pretty well and it's available around here, which is important. I consider this batter the background and sometimes I have them plain....
... and somtimes I add a ton of junk in... like this batch has walnuts and Guittard chocolate inside. Mint is also good. Mint frosting is good. Light frosting with a toasted almond on each tiny square makes them fancy for parties. This is an 8X8X2, but the recipes doubles easily for a 9X13. We forgot we were putting these on the blog and took some bites first before we took the picture. Ooooops.
The recipe...
1/2 cup butter
2 squares semi-sweet chocolate
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. good Mexican Vanilla
3/4 cup flour
Melt butter & chocolate over low heat. Stir in sugar, eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour. Spread batter into greased 8X8X2 baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 min. (the time is going to depend on your oven... don't over bake)
It's a simple recipe. Little c can pretty much make them herself after helping me make two big batches for a church social tonight.

Red Snowflake...

This is one of the boxes that I am most proud of.. (still not this years box).. The depth in this red took quite a bit of experimentation to get and all together there are about 8 layers of paint on this box.
I love the quote inside...
We shall find peace. We shall hear angels. We shall see the sky sparkling with diamonds.
Anton Chekhov
I hope that I can make a couple of these for the shop this Christmas..

I still love toys...

I painted these and gave them to C for our 10th Anniversary... I guess that I wanted him to know that it was still going to be fun around here. These tops are great.. you can really get them spinning. I think that I will make some for the shop for Christmas.

Mums...

I love mums and daisies... usually they don't have a very lovely scent to them, but this one does. I love the soft purple color too.

Alicia's Amazing Art...

These paintings are some of my treasures. My sister Alicia painted them for me. She is so talented. I wish that I could water-color too! (the colors are much brighter and I guess I just couldn't get a great shot of them)

Cute!

My mom bought little c the cutest ever skirt from Boden. I just love it! It was on sale... see it here.

Venetian Beads...

I love colored glass so much... especially paperweights. But I also love these blown Venetian beads. They are so lovely and would make a very lovely something.... See them here.
